Contact: Christine Weeks
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh – Rachel Werner MD, PhD received the John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) at the organization’s 2008 annual meeting in early June. The Thompson Prize recognizes faculty from member programs whose work contributes to knowledge in health services based on their research publications in the field. The Prize is in honor of John D. Thompson, a professor of health administration education who set exemplary standards for teaching, commitment to learning, collegial relationships, and health services research.
Mark V. Pauly, PhD, program director and chair of the graduate program in healthcare management at the Wharton School nominated Dr. Werner for the Thompson award. In his nomination letter Dr. Pauly cited Dr. Werner’s exceptional ability to identify pressing and enduring policy issues, her methodologic skill and the “insight, relevance, and rigor” of her research program. He wrote, “Rachel is an outstanding health services researcher and an outstanding individual. She has extraordinary energy, an appropriately skeptical mind of a true scholar, the ability to understand and use sophisticated theory and empirical evidence and, most of all, a sense of what is a good problem—an important question that can be answered.”
Werner’s research program examines the impact of health care quality improvement initiatives on racial disparities and overall quality of care. Her work has been published in the Health Services Research, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, and other leading journals.
Werner is Staff Physician at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, a Core Investigator with the VA HSR&D Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.
Dr. Werner is the second CHERP Investigator to receive this award. Kevin Volpp, MD, PhD was similarly honored in 2006.
