Next CHERP Pilot Submission Deadline: September 2, 2008
The Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) invites applications for pilot research proposals that seek to identify, understand or intervene to promote equity and quality in health and health care among veterans. Special emphasis is placed on research focused on vulnerable veteran populations, including those that face potential discrimination because of race, ethnicity, or social status, and those at risk for disparities in health or health care due to other physical and/or mental conditions. CHERP Awards 2003 Pilot Research Funds
In our second year of funding proposals, CHERP has selected three projects that encompass a range of health equity research topics using both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
CHERP awarded pilot research funds to Megan Crowley-Matoka, PhD for her project "Understanding problems of quality and equity in pain management: the provider role." The objective of this ethnographic study is to identify and analyze the sociocultural factors that influence how providers make decisions about the use of opioid analgesics for veterans experiencing nonmalignant pain.
Said A. Ibrahim, MD, MPH also received pilot fund from CHERP. His research is entitled "Racial disparities in veterans with venous thromboembolism." The study is designed to 1) determine if there are racial disparities in the care of veterans with venous thromboembolism (VTE), as defined by differential implementation of recommended processes of care; and 2) assess the feasibility both of identifying patients with VTE and of abstracting data from national and local VA databases.
CHERP also provided pilot funds to Douglas J. Wiebe, PhD for his project "Mortality in suicide attempters: A follow-up study." This study seeks to provide key information on long-term outcomes for patients hospitalized for a suicide attempt at the Veterans Health Administration. It is the first step in documenting the disparities in mortality experienced by suicide attempters, who are disproportionately female and largely a Vietnam-era cohort at the VA. Contact:

In 2002, CHERP Awarded $200,000 in Pilot Funds
CHERP began to fulfill its mission through the funding of 11 local projects in its first year. These projects seek to answer a wide range of important and specific health disparity questions.
The CHERP-funded projects answer questions that include: Are there racial differences in oral antibiotic use at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System? How can end-of-life services be made more ethnically appropriate? What are the racial and ethnic variations in joint replacement utilization within the VA? To what extent are there racial differences in depression management? Do provider-patient communications about prostate cancer risk differ depending on race? How does preventative care vary among VISNs? How does substance abuse affect the offering and completion of coronary revascularization procedures?
Other projects focus on broader health disparity research issues, such as adjusting for selection bias, improving a symptom assessment scale for patients with end-stage renal disease, examining the interplay between social environment and diabetes management and the generalizability of health disparities research conducted within the VA. These and other research projects will answer key questions about the factors that lead to health disparities the elements of the health care system that can reduce inappropriate disparities, and the design and evaluation of interventions to improve health and health care within the VA and elsewhere.
